March is here and spring is in the air in Charleston! For 77 years, the Historic Charleston Foundation has celebrated houses, history, and culture during its annual spring festival. Live like a local through a variety of Tours & Events, with exclusive access to some of the most beautiful private houses and gardens in Charleston during the Charleston Festival from March 13th through April 13th. The Charleston Wine and Food Festival is in town from March 5th-9th. Charleston real estate sales were about the same last year as they were in 2023. Mortgage rates are hovering back around the 7% level. The Fed predicted three rate cuts for 2025, but now they have backed off this idea. Before 2023, the last year that the Charleston area saw less than 17k transactions was 2015. The Charleston area median sales price is now at $428k, which is a 3.5% increase from last year.Meanwhile, the Charleston economy is still booming. Breeze Airways has announced three new nonstop routes from Charleston to Albany, Rochester, and Burlington. The airline is also inaugurating its previously announced service to New Haven, Conn. American Airlines is pleased to return its non-stop service between Charleston International and NY’s LaGuardia, beginning June 6th. The twice-weekly flights will provide travelers with a direct connection between Charleston and NYC. After almost two years of construction, the SC Aquarium has expanded its educational programming for students statewide through the new Boeing Learning Lab at the Maritime Center. The 8,500 sqft space includes four indoor classrooms, an open-air classroom, a broadcast studio and aquarium staff office space. The Medical University of South Carolina has unveiled a new learning space in Charleston. The new hub is dedicated to learning, innovation and collaboration and is located on the first floor of the College of Nursing building, allowing the program to enroll and train 40 more undergraduate nursing students per year. Two of Charleston’s local businesses and executives from the food and beverage industry have made it to the semifinalists list for the 2025 James Beard Awards. Both located on the Charleston peninsula, Chubby Fish has been chosen for the Outstanding Restaurant category while Femi Oyediran and Miles White from Graft Wine Shop have been nominated for the Outstanding Professional in the Beverage Service category. Plans for a new recreation center and aquatics facility, set to be built in the heart of Johns Island, have been unveiled. The multi-million-dollar investment will provide a state-of-the-art facility for residents, featuring sports and recreational programming for all ages. Publix is adding another store to its 1,390-store portfolio, with a new location in Summerville. The 48k sq ft store opened on Nexton Parkway with 140 associates.
