Charleston real estate sales are getting off to a similar slow start this year, similar to last year. Higher mortgage rates have been the main reason for slow sales. They are currently hovering around 7%. The Federal Reserve announced their plans for 2024 were to implement around three rate reductions. However, recent upticks in the economy have led them to pull back a bit and it may take longer into the year before we see those rate reductions.

Meanwhile, the Charleston area economy has been doing fantastic! Breeze Airways announced it is returning nonstop summer seasonal flights between Charleston and LA beginning May 3rd. Breeze has also added flights to Newburgh, NY. The Charleston International Airport set a record last year with more than 6 million travelers. Thai Airways recently ordered 49 N Chas Boeing Dreamliners. The tech giant Google has confirmed they have purchased property in Dorchester County to build a data center campus. Google has had a presence in Berkeley County for many years. Moondog Animation Studio, an animation and immersive experiences company is growing its South Carolina footprint with an expansion in Charleston County. The company’s $90,000 investment plans to create 20 new jobs within five years. A major global real estate investment firm has reached a milestone in expanding its development footprint at the former North Charleston Navy Base. In December, the city of North Charleston voted to move forward with the sale and the developer’s agreement for just more than 37 acres for $10.7 million. The future Battery Park is slated to become a mixed-use development project totaling up to 70 acres and will include more than 1,400 residential units, a mix of commercial uses, green space and more in a prime location along the Cooper River on the northern end of the site.
